Galičica is a mountain that stretches across the border between the Republic of Macedonia and Albania. There is a National park on the Macedonian side of the mountain, situated between the two biggest lakes in the republic: Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. It stretches over an area of 227 square kilometers.
The highest peak of Galičica mountain is Magaro (2,255 m). We were determined to conquer it, but the weather had other plans. We walked about 3/4 of the narrow marked trail when a heavy fog beset us and we couldn't see anything anymore. Sadly we had to turn back, but it was worth the try. The world I encountered up there was beyond amazing, and I’ll probably come back this spring to try and climb it again.
These are the photos I took on my hike on Galičica mountain about two months ago, just as winter was beginning. I hope you enjoy!
Special thanks to Zarko and Darko Terzievski who were my guides on this hike, and know every inch of the place like the back of their own hand!
